testRI was a study to find out what was in Rhode Island’s local drug supply. It is important to know that the samples collected and tested only showed us a small part of the drug supply in Rhode Island. These results may not represent the broader drug supply in the state.

What was tested?

| Etonitazene | Etonitazene is a potent synthetic opioid that is a nitazene analog. Some studies suggest that etonitazene may be ten times more potent than fentanyl. | Etizolam | Etizolam is a thienotriazolodiazepine derivative with a pharmacological profile similar to that of benzodiazepines. Etizolam is currently approved for therapeutic use in certain Asian and European countries, but is not FDA approved for use in the United States. Because etizolam is not regulated in the US and is found in fake pills sold as “Xanax” or mixed into other drugs, risk for adverse effects is heightened. | Metonitazene | Metonitazene is a potent synthetic opioid in the nitazene class. Nitazenes cause opioid effects and are reversible with naloxone. Within the nitazene class potency can vary. Metonitazene has a potency similar to fentanyl. Other nitazenes, such as protonitazene and isotonitazene have potency exceeding fentanyl. |

| Xylazine | Xylazine is a veterinary sedative. Xylazine is a long-acting and sedating medication, but it is not an opioid. Especially if combined with other sedating medications it can cause unresponsiveness, low blood pressure, a slowed heart rate, and decreased breathing. Xylazine use has been associated with skin ulcers and wounds. Chronic use can also lead to dependence and a withdrawal syndrome that can cause irritability, anxiety, and dysphoria. |
